Overview

Providing effective supervision can be challenging, but it is also essential for risk management, practice management and upholding your professional obligations.

Supervision is often not front of mind for busy lawyers. Many senior lawyers provide general guidance and support to more junior colleagues, but this usually does not meet the required standard of reasonable, appropriate and proactive supervision.

The focus of this course is supporting lawyers with responsibility for supervising others engaged in legal practice – principals. It will also be beneficial for more junior lawyers under supervision to help identify when they may require more support.

The course covers a number of topics including:

  • Why supervision is important, and the benefits of effective supervision;
  • Practical discussions of what amounts to reasonable, appropriate and proactive supervision;
  • Potential consequences of failing to provide appropriate supervision for lawyers and support staff;
  • Tips for proactive supervision including file audits, supervisory meetings and providing additional support for remote workers.

The course also discusses a number of different cases which provide real-life illustrations of the consequences of ineffective supervision that falls short of the required standards.

  1. 5.0/5
    Excellent Course
    The course was thorough and the questions were structured such as to make one really think about the subject matter
  2. 4.0/5
    Provides excellent guidance on supervision requirements, expectations and best practice for graduate lawyers.
    I found the training to be incredibly helpful and insightful in offering guidance and best practice as a graduate lawyer. Definitely a 'must' for all graduate lawyers seeking to understand the law and law firm's expectations around supervision and practice management of a graduate lawyer.
  3. 5.0/5
    Great course for junior lawyers
    An excellent course for junior lawyers especially if they’ve been told there is an “Open Door “ policy at their firm. This course explains in simple language what is acceptable supervision and what isn’t. And a lot of it is common sense so junior lawyers can identify more easily what their Principal may be expecting of them and what their Principal should be reasonably providing in terms of support.
  4. 4.0/5
    Valuable
    Provides valuable principles to avoid disciplinary proceedings caused by inadequate supervision.
  5. 4.0/5
    Great case law examples
    Made some tricky issues clear & easy to understand, particularly the case law examples
