Statutory interpretation is a perpetual challenge for judges and lawyers alike.  This course discusses recent High Court authority on statutory interpretation as a vehicle for exploring recent developments in this field.

Applying the principles of statutory interpretation is always a matter of emphasis and nuance, and there have been differences in judicial approaches to the task over time. 

This course explores whether or not there has been a shift over recent years in the approach of the High Court in relation to statutory interpretation.  It specifically discusses whether or not there has been a shift in the approach of the High Court from literalism to a more purposive and contextual approach.

The course discusses the fundamental principles of statutory interpretation and the seminal High Court authorities on statutory interpretation.  It then examines more recent High Court decisions on the subject and the implications of these decisions for lawyers and judges alike.
