Financial literacy is critical in many areas of legal practice, but trying to understand financial statements can be mystifying. This engaging animated course, featuring John Cleese and Dawn French, provides you with the tools you need to understand and interpret financial statements, without assuming any prior knowledge of finance.

The course discusses the basic features and terminology used in key financial documents - the balance sheet, the profit and loss account (or statement of income), and the cashflow forecast. The different concepts are explored through the experiences of two managers – a well-educated company director (John Cleese) and the streetwise owner of a small manufacturing firm (Dawn French). They explain and discuss all of the key concepts in plain English, without resorting to financial jargon.

By completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Recognise the basic features of a balance sheet, profit and loss account, and cashflow forecast.
  • Understand the meaning and purpose of these documents.
  • Understand how a business makes profits, and why.
  • Devise an action plan to enhance your appreciation of finance.

  3. 4.0/5
    Comprehensive Course
This course was very comprehensive and covered a lot of information. I like how it broke down, what can often be seen as complex topics, into easy-to-understand modules. The course effectively built on each topic to present a complete picture of business finances.
