Introduction to Entertainment Law
Entertainment law is multi-faceted. It combines legal concepts drawn from commercial law, which are then moulded specifically to meet the requirements of the entertainment industry. This course provides an introduction to this diverse area of law and explores some of the current challenges in this area.
The course examines legal issues impacting on the music industry including the legal interactions of bands internally and with third parties such as record companies and music publishers. It also discusses copyright, band structure and contractual agreements.
Next, the course explores the interactive digital media industry and discusses how technological innovation means that lawyers working in this field are increasingly venturing into uncharted territory. It also discusses the key types of contractual agreements used in this industry.
Finally, the course examines issues relevant to the film and television industry including the role of key players such as producers, talent agents, investors, guarantors and lawyers. It also discusses the role of finance and the importance of protecting the chain of title.
